Every tattoo station needs one thing before the licensing conversation even starts: somewhere to wash your hands properly, with hot and cold running water, right where you work. Simple in theory — awkward in practice, because half the best studio spaces in the country have no plumbing anywhere near the working area. Why the hand-wash sink matters more than anything else in the room
Hand hygiene is the backbone of infection control in tattooing. Gloves are not a substitute — hands get washed before gloving, after de-gloving, between clients, and any time you touch something outside the working field. That only happens consistently when the sink is at the station, not down a corridor. It is also the first thing an environmental health officer looks for, and increasingly something clients notice too: a proper wash station in view says more about your studio than anything you could write on a poster.
What the hand-wash sink is for — and what it is not for
One thing worth being precise about, because it comes up in inspections: the hygiene sink at your station is for hands. Cleaning equipment is a separate job with its own protocols and, in studios that reprocess equipment, its own dedicated area — mixing instrument cleaning into your hand-wash basin is exactly the kind of cross-over inspectors flag. The problem: studios without plumbing
Basements, units above shops, converted rooms, rented chairs in someone else’s building — the spaces tattooists actually work in were rarely plumbed with licensing in mind.
